Strong and durable, I've never seen one break. An excellent choice for a locker, toolbox, rural mailbox, shed, etc. As with all but the most massive, covered shackle padlocks, these can be cut with a bolt cutter. In most cases this lock will resist an attack better than the hasp or chain you're using. Especially if used outdoors, use WD40 to lubricate several times a year.

I'm using it for a thicker gauge chain and it is superior to the standard Master locks I typically use. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the laminated casing can crack and break if you drop the padlock onto a cement floor. A disadvantage to ordering this single unit is that if you need more than one, each has a different pair of keys. I use another set of three with the shorter shackles with interchangeable keys for storage rooms but prefer this model. Next time, I'll purchase a multiple package of the 1 1/2" padlocks.

It worked great for dozens of trips. But it quit working this weekend - I now have a locked suitcase. The combination no longer works and I will have to use a hacksaw to remove it. It is a good thing that I am at home and not on a vacation. If I were on vacation I would probably have to cut the suitcase open because I wouldn't have a hacksaw!

If your goal is to keep things closed and have a visual theft deterrent, this is probably fine. As far as actually provinding protection, this lock can be easily defeated with the smallest of hack saws. The shank does not even lock into the body of the lock - it just dead-ends into a 2mm deep bowl on the top of the lock. Also, the three number combination can easily be cracked - when you realize that numbers on either side of the number selected are also triggered. That is, if you need to select 4, both 3 and 5 will also work.

Finally, as stated below, this lock is lacking the ability to see if the TSA opened your bag.

On the plus side, the set your own combination feature worked fine.

For our Sunday School and Summer Camp, we wanted a combination lock that allows access to the fridge and snack cupboards to a several selected individuals. A lock with keys would not have worked since we wished to provide access to several individuals. We wanted to keep the kids and hungry adults out. I searched far and wide and even went to our area locksmith. An extensive search finally got me here.

It was easy to set up. The only drawback I have about the product is that it is almost symmetrical with the combinations placed on the top. Individuals can lock it with the backside on the front, thus rendering an asymmetrical combination worthless. Thus, we are using this with a symmetrical combination code e.g., the first and the third digits are the same.

I ordered two of these and got both of the same color. I wish the Amazon warehouse picker would have used his heart and given us the two with different colors.

For our need, this should work out great. I will be buying more of these.

A few problems.

I purchased the lock and two sets of override keys.

1) Even though the product photo for the keys shows 2 keys on a ring it really is only one key per order.

2) The key did open the lock for me. I ordered two keys and both would not work.

3) The lock was suppose to come with a "combination change tool". It did not

Returned both items. Some things are best ordered locally.

I love the 4 number combination because the 4 number PIN I use often so I'm never struggling to remember what the combination is. Sturdy enough for the gym locker and easily recognizable due to different color (mine is bright green). The only thing I hate about it is in order to lock it you must set it to the 'unlock' combination. This doesnt make sense at all.

I would recommend something that you can just press and it snaps shut. I also recommend a lock that I saw on Amazon (sorry dont remember the name) but once you lock that lock and turn the dials in the opposite direction they all turn to 0. Thats a good feature instead of randomly turning your dials randomly

Here are the actual dimensions: Width of Steel Body: 2 inches; Maximum Thickness of Steel Body: 1 1/8 inch; Length of Steel Body Including Rivets: 1 5/8 inch; Length of Key: 1 5/8 inch; Diameter of shackle: 3/8 inch; Width of Throat: 15/16 inch; Maximum Depth of Throat: 1 inch. I hadn't realized how small they were, but they worked very sufficiently regardless for what I got them for. My only real beef with this particular item is that the hole for the key chain is very unforgiving so if you were to accidentally bend the key around, it will in fact damage the metal key chain loop some. If you get this and plan to keep it on a key chain ring, aim for something fairly thin! If the company is reading this, please considering increasing the hole size a bit more.

Mine is "red" I guess (or "purple"), although I'd call it pink. I still can't get over the dial lighting up whenever I turn it. I haven't found a use for it yet, but I still love it. One thing to be aware of though is that the index mark doesn't glow so you have to guess where it is if it is really dark. But that is easy to do because the shackle gets illuminated by the glow of the dial, so you just reckon the pointer to be midway between the two sides of the shackle. These combination lock dials aren't that precise so you can be off by a count and still get the combination right.

if a thief is determined, they could break any lock. that being said, this lock is simple, and looks a tad bit flimsy. it definately would take someone with the proper tools less than a minute to slice through this lock.

don't get me wrong, i appreciate the little guy, but i don't think it will save my bike from potential stealers. deter, yes, but not stop. plus i live in a big city where bike theft is common. maybe i'm just cheap, but i believe this lock is worth it's price. i also use a u-lock for added protection.

"Tough lock, in more ways than one" 2009-02-02

What a rugged piece of hardware! This thing could probably be run over by a tank and still function!

However, I've have a beef with the keys and keyhole. The keyhole is tough to get to and unlock. I guess the tough comes with the tough. There is a black hard-plastic flap covering the keyhole, which in my opinion may be great at locking out rain, but I had to use a screwdriver to pop it out so I could get to the keyhole. I ended up just breaking it off completely, because I personally don't think it will keep out moisture, and it's really just annoying to work with. Plus, I didn't want to post a screwdriver next to the lock so I can always get to the keyhole every time.

The keys I received were poorly made. The tips of both of my keys were bent slightly making it quite difficult to insert into the keyhole. I had to take some pliers and a vice to try and straighten them.

Outside of these complaints, I like Master locks, always have, but this one could stand a redesign.

I will purchase a different lock for my use. Thanks for reading!

Even though this lock offers convenience in being able to set your own combination, it is very insecure. Once could pull on the lock while spining the number dials to easily pick the lock. In fact, had this lock on my luggage traveling in Asia, and arriving at my destination the lock was missing. Instead, check out the 4-dial combination lock from Brinks. If you pull the lock while spinning the dials, even when you get to the correct combination the Brinks lock won't fall open. Instead, you need to release the tension (stop pulling on the lock), then pull for it to open. So somebody trying to pick your Brinks lock has to go one number at a time vs spining quickly thru an entire sequence of numbers on the Master Lock.

The lock is heavy and durable. Its a pain to set your combination, and you have to jumble the numbers in order to lock it. The lock face numbers are inverted, so you have to tilt your head a certain way to look at the numbers. Other then these inconviences, I give this lock * * * - Not what I expected from such a good lock company.

My neighbor had this securing his outboard to his boat. Thieves cut the end opposite the lock with a pair of wire cutters and slid it off. By the looks of it, it took them very little effort to steal his motor. I wouldn't buy one of these, it is not a serious anti-theft device.

I had one of these on my 7.5 HP Outboard which was on the transom of my fishing boat.

I say "had," because the scumbag who stole this motor pried it off with a tire iron. And from the look of it, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of effort put into breaking it. He was nice enough to leave me the broken lock and the tire iron.

It's been said before that if someone really wants your outboard they're going to figure out a way to steal it.

But I don't think this piece of junk even slowed the thief down.
